Program structure

This concentration is a two-year program.

Thesis track

This track is designed for students with an interest in research. As part of writing their thesis, students of the thesis track will be given personal instruction and mentoring throughout their course of studies.

Non-thesis track

This track is designed for students interested in training and expanding their knowledge in formal and informal education.

Individualized honors track

This program combines an individualized program created by you and your academic supervisor, and a study group that is a basis for the development of a multidisciplinary research community.

  • Thesis track 1 only, 30 credits.
  • Personal mentoring by academic mentor.
  • Group mentoring.
  • Compulsory courses (12 credits).
First year

Interdisciplinary Perspective of Education in the 21st Century (course no. 37912, 4 credits)
Theoretical interdisciplinary course. In this course students explore core questions in education, fundamental concepts, diverse research methods, and current research in the various disciplines.

Education Scientists of Tomorrow (course no. 37884, 0 credits)
An introduction to applied research in education: in educational institutions, technology accelerators, the parliamentary research institute, educational NGOs, etc. This course also promotes team work. The course includes two field trips a year.

Statistics and research methods for students of education (course no. 37803, 2 credits)

Qualitative research: Principles and methods (course no. 34886, 2 credits)

Thesis proposal seminar: First year (1 credit)

Second year

Thesis proposal seminar: Second year (1 credit)

Advanced methodology (2 credits)
Depending on your area of research.
Quantitative research in education: Advanced statistical methods in educational research (course no. 37806)

Qualitative research in education: Observe, question, interpret: Qualitative research in education 2 (course no. 37847)

Individualized elective courses (18 credits) (in coordination with supervisor)
You may take up to 8 credits outside the Department of Education, of which up to 4 credits in advanced undergraduate courses.
