Teaching certificate

Why get a teaching certificate at the Hebrew University?

The Department of Teaching qualifies students to teach high school subjects (grades 7-12) in natural sciences, mathematics, humanities, social sciences, and languages. Studies in the Department of Teaching combines supervised fieldwork (in the a specific subject and in general education) and theoretical courses in education, teaching, and research literacy. Studying in the Department of Teaching at the Hebrew University guarantees a high-quality meaningful experience:

  • theoretical courses taught by researchers and lecturers of renown and who have international research experience.
  • an emphasis on meaningful fieldwork experience in schools: first year students explore building lesson plans and classroom management guided by experienced pedagogical instructors. Second-year students will focus on areas in general pedagogy such as life-skill education, teacher as educator, working with gifted children, and more.
  • department seminars, field trips, and collaborative seminars on current issues in pedagogy.

What can I do with this degree? When can I start the program?

A teaching certificate is a prerequisite for receiving a Ministry of Education teaching license and teacher employment benefits (salary, continuing education fund, and promotion track). Education workers who do not teach (such as educational counselors) and lecturers in teacher colleges (including holders of a PhD) are also required to have a teaching certificate. In Israel, all teachers must hold three certificates: bachelor degree, teaching certificate, and teaching license. In addition, all holders of an academic degree and teaching certificate are required to complete a one-year internship in teaching. The internship is your first year of employment as a teacher in which you receive regular market terms including a salary. Once you pass your year of internship, the Ministry of Education will grant you a teaching license.

The teaching program accepts students in their second undergraduate year (bachelor degree), graduate and postgraduate students in disciplines that are compatible with teaching disciplines offered by the Department.
