Terms of admission and application procedures

Who can apply?

  • students or graduates of departments compatible with the school subjects offered by the Department of Teaching 
  • students who have completed at least one undergraduate year
  • students and holders of advanced degrees
  • teachers in office at high schools or institutions of higher education (required: at least 2 years of experience, 50% position)

General terms of admission

The Department of Teaching accepts candidates with a bachelor degree or students who have completed at least one undergraduate year with a minimum average grade of 80.

Students or graduates of the departments of chemistry, biology, mathematics, physics, and computer science must have a minimum average grade of 75.

The average is calculated from the final grades given for at least 30 credits earned over at least two semesters.

Honors tracks are available. Average grade for admission is 90. Average grade for admission of honors students in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and computer science is 85. The average is calculated from the final grades for given for at least 30 credits that were earned over at least two semesters.

Hebrew language proficiency: Holders of degrees from overseas must apply to the international students admissions office for information. Holders of a non-Israeli high-school diploma must provide a certificate of completion of level 3 Hebrew at least to be considered for admission to the teaching program. 

Admission to the Bezalel art teaching program is available only to students or graduates of the Hebrew University Department of Art History and students or graduates of the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design. Candidates are required to attend a screening workshop. Students of the Department of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies who wish to qualify to teach Arabic must pass an exam and complete conversion courses in the Department of Arabic as required by that department. Students whose records meet the terms of admission will be called for an interview whose main purpose in to be introduced, manage expectations, and receive preliminary guidance about enrolling in courses and appropriate track. Candidates for the joint Bezalel art teaching program are required to pass a screening workshop but not an interview.

How to apply

Registration for the 2022/2023 teaching program is currently open until June 30, 2022. After this date, registration will be open depending on availability. 

All screening and admission procedures for the joint Bezalel art program are conducted at Bezalel. For information please contact Mr. Asaf Elkalai asaf.e@bezalel.ac.il. Please submit your application by 15 May 2022.

If you are registering for the second semester teaching certificate program, please note that:

The fieldwork courses in your discipline are multi-term courses and can only be studied during a complete school year. This means that if you register in the second semester you may only enroll in one-term courses and will have to enroll in an additional full year so that you can complete all your certificate requirements. 

The following programs do not allow registration for the second semester: Joint art program with Bezalel; Academy-Classroom; Hebrew for speakers of Arabic

Step 1

Register for university: If you studied in Israel, register online at the Hebrew University Admissions Office via the Hebrew University website. Please include all the documents described on the website.

Step 2

Register at the School of Education: Create an account in the registration system, fill in your information, and upload all the documents listed in the registration system. Make sure you complete all the following actions:

  • Fill in personal information in English and receive a password in your email. 
  • Use the password to log in to the registration system and complete the following actions:
  • Fill in the online registration form.
  • Upload the documents specified during your registration.
  • Finish the process using Close Registration.

Step 3

Students whose records meet the terms of admission will be called for an interview. Its main purpose is to be introduced, manage expectations, and receive preliminary guidance about enrolling in courses and in the appropriate track.

You will receive final notice of admission after completing the registration process and the interview.

Candidates for the joint Bezalel art teaching program will be required to pass a screening workshop but not an interview.

Please note

We are unable to process applications from candidates who have not completed their initial registration on both platforms or are missing any of the required documents. 

Depending on your academic background, and in addition to the program in the Department of Teaching, you may be required to supplement your academic education in certain subjects.

If you have a degree from abroad please register at the International Students Admissions Office in addition to your application in the Department of Teaching.

To receive your teaching certificate you must graduate in the degree as appropriate for your program.

To be eligible for a teaching certificate you must pass all fieldwork courses (passing grade is 70).

Fieldwork continues through the year without a break between semesters.

To pass the fieldwork courses, you will be evaluated throughout the year and must be on a par with expectations of a beginning educator on the following:

  • Professional identity: having developed over the course of your training a personal educational philosophy and an awareness of social, ethical, and moral dilemmas in education.
  • Participation: regular attendance, active participation and contribution, timeliness, completing assignments.
  • Function as teacher of the discipline: minimum required proficiency in the discipline, required pedagogical-didactic knowledge (integrate thinking skills, diverse teaching methods, class preparation, constructing exams and handouts, etc.)
  • Interaction with students: class management skills, positive communication with students, inclusion, differential and individualized approach, handling discipline.
  • Team work: ability to collaborate with colleagues, understand educational system needs, and work within school requirements.
  • Learning: ability to provide and receive feedback, reflective skills.
