Peer teacher professional development: input, output, and processes

Short description

Teacher professional development is considered essential for the quality of education. Research points out that to make teacher professional development work, they need to collaborate. In the first part of this talk, I will present findings from two review studies that I conducted. Both review studies focused on “peer teacher professional development (PTPD)”, yet one review study focused on the factors and conditions that influence the effectiveness of PTPD; the other on the outcomes thereof. Both review studies, as well as many others, pointed out that the interaction processes during PTPD are key to its success. In a descriptive study (the second part of the talk), I explored the interaction processes of teachers, collaborating during PTPD, in terms of (a) participatory: who is talking; and (b) conversational moves: the function of what is being said. A dynamic system approach was used to examine patterns in these interaction processes. To illustrate the findings in a more original way, I will play short music fragments where the instruments and melody represent the turn-taking and conversational moves patterns.
