Pedagogy, Teacher Learning and Educational Renewal

Prof. Adam Lefstein

Our research group focuses on (a) pedagogy -- classroom teaching and learning practices and how we think and talk about them; (b) teacher learning processes, especially informal teacher learning on the job; and (c) the challenges of improving teaching and teacher learning, especially on a wide scale.

We typically employ linguistic ethnographic concepts and methods to explore discourse, communication and social practices.  Most of our studies are conducted in the context of research-practice partnerships with education professionals, in collaboration with the Center for the Study of Pedagogy: Research-Practice Partnerships at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.

Current studies include investigations of how to promote equity in classroom discourse (led by Aviv Orner, in partnership with the Israeli Institute for Gender Equity in Education), core practices of Instructional Supervisors in teacher education colleges (led by Tal Carmi, in partnership with the Mofet Institute), studio pedagogy in arts and design (led by Edith Bouton, with Zvi Bekerman and Barak Perlman, in partnership with Betzalel Academy of Arts and Design), and the use of a technological tool to elicit student feedback on their classroom experience (with Ayelet Becher, Gidi Dishon, Moriah Omer-Attali, and Inbar Michalzon, in partnership with Kayma, the Branco Weiss Institute, and Teach First Israel).
