Dr. Adi Sherzer is a senior lecturer at the School of Education of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, focusing on the history of Israeli education, culture and public sphere. His work emphasizes the multidimensional relations between Israel, the Diaspora, and the Jewish past. He is especially interested in the ongoing negotiations between the various definitions of Judaism and the Israeli framework of Mamlakhtiyut (Israeli republicanism). In this context he studies Israeli and Jewish rituals, cultural aspects of Israel-Diaspora relations, Israeli military education and more.
Dr. Sherzer was a Rotenstreich fellow at the Azrieli Center (Ben-Gurion Research Institute for the Study of Israel & Zionism), a guest fellow at Max Weber Kolleg (Universität Erfurt), and a Fulbright fellow at the University of California, Berkeley. He advises a range of public institutions in Israel and abroad on issues of heritage and commemoration, and in 2023 he was awarded the President and Prime Minister’s Prize for the Study of David Ben-Gurion.
He serves as Editor of Dor Ledor: Studies in the History of Jewish Education and as a member of the executive board of the Association of Civil-Military Studies in Israel. Since 2025 he has served as Head of the MA Program in Jewish Education at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
His first book, Mamlakhti Culture: Independence Day, 1948-1958, was published by Shazar Press (2026). His second book, co-authored with Ofer Shiff and examining the negotiations between mamlakhtiyut and various “others” in Israeli society, is forthcoming with Lamda Press.
ד"ר עדי שרצר הוא מרצה בכיר בבית הספר לחינוך של האוניברסיטה העברית, המתמקד בהיסטוריה של החינוך, התרבות והמרחב הציבורי בישראל. מחקריו מדגישים את מערכת היחסים המורכבת בין ישראל, התפוצה והעבר היהודי תוך התמקדות במושג הממלכתיות. בהקשר זה הוא חוקר טקסים ישראליים ויהודיים, היבטים שונים של יחסי ישראל-תפוצה, חינוך בצה"ל ועוד. ד"ר שרצר היה עמית רוטנשטרייך במרכז עזריאלי לימודי ישראל (מכון בן-גוריון לחקר ישראל והציונות), חוקר אורח במכון מקס ובר (אוניברסיטת ארפורט), ועמית פולברייט באוניברסיטת קליפורניה, ברקלי. לצד זאת הוא מייעץ לגופים שונים בנושאים של חינוך ציבורי, הנצחה ויחסי צבא-חברה, וזכה בפרס נשיא המדינה וראש הממשלה לחקר מורשתו של בן-גוריון לשנת 2023.
הוא משמש כעורך של כתב העת "דור לדור" לחקר ולתיעוד תולדות החינוך היהודי, וחבר ההנהלה של אגודת חוקרי צבא-חברה בישראל. מאז שנת 2025 משמש כראש תכנית המוסמך בחינוך יהודי.
ספרו הראשון "זמן מתן מדינתנו: עיצובו של חג ממלכתי" ראה אור בהוצאת שזר (2026). ספרו השני (שנכתב יחד עם עופר שיף), העוסק במערכת היחסים בין הממלכתיות ל"אחרים", עתיד לראות אור בהוצאת למדא עיון.
